Tips for You on Roof and Attic Ventilation

Roofing technology and industry best practices are constantly changing. At Alpha Roofing we work tirelessly to stay on top with the best education and training, incorporating this knowledge into our best practices. We feel that there is value in sharing our knowledge with our customers.

Below you can find information for roof and attic ventilation that were discussed at our annual AirVent seminar. If you've any questions please call our office and one of our experienced team members will assist you.

Why is Roof Ventilation Important?

You may have noticed vents on your roof, or perhaps a neighbor's roof, and thought to yourself why is this important? As it happens, roof ventilation plays a big part in the comfort and longevity of your home. A properly ventilated attic space has outside air flowing through it from bottom to top.

Outside air enters the attic space at the bottom of the roof, most commonly from the soffit or under the eaves, and exits the attic space from the top or peak of the roof, from roof louvers or ridge vent. This flow of air through the attic space does the important job of removing excess heat and moisture produced from inside of the building.

Excess heat and moisture can contribute to the rapid deterioration of your roof. During warmer months an under or un-ventilated attic space can create an extremely hot attic. An attic that is too hot can increase the rate at which a roof deteriorates.

When excessive heat is produced from below the roof line warping and premature aging will soon be noticeable from the exterior of your roof. Additionally, this warming affect can contribute to unwanted warming of the living space, raising the cost of air conditioning and refrigeration.

Ventilation is just as important in the cooler months as well. When temperatures drop outside the heat and moisture we produce inside our homes can sometimes escape into our attic spaces. When this happens it is important that this warmth and moisture have a clear path out of your home.

This is achieved through an adequately vented attic space. With nowhere to go, the moisture rich warm air can collect in the attic and condense into frost or water, which will eventually drip down through your attic insulation, collect on your ceiling and cause unsightly water stains.

This moisture can also negatively impact the effectiveness of your insulation and lead to costly damage to drywall and other interior fixtures.

Our experienced and knowledgeable technicians are ready to answer your ventilation questions and explain the options we can provide. Call us today. Whether you choose Alpha Roofing or another roofing contractor for your project, be sure to ask your technician if your roof top ventilation is adequate to properly ventilate your attic space.
